What was the reason behind the CBSE for changing the curriculum these days?
The new curriculum is not just a random update, it is the actual implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2023) designed and created over years. At the heart of these changes is the rather simple concept that Indian education has been focused on the memorization of facts and information over the cultivation of real understanding.
The revised curriculum for Classes 11 and 12 was released on 1st April 2026 and the curriculum for Classes 9 and 10 was released on 2nd April 2026. As per experts in the field, it’s the largest change in Indian schooling in the last decade.
Making the leap from rote learning to real understanding.
The biggest change parents need to be aware of is the transition from a memorisation-based learning approach to a competency based learning approach with conceptual understanding. Children will now be evaluated to see if they can be able to use this knowledge and learning and not just remember it. Classrooms will be more discussion, project and experiential and in real-world applications throughout the classroom.

This is a new structure for Grade 9.
Class 9 is undergoing a major facelift because the curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation for students in the board examination years. The new building puts greater focus on:
- Understanding of concepts rather than memorization of information
- Project work and experiential learning.
- The relationship of subjects with one another.
- Stronger problem-solving skills
For Class 9, this will help to eliminate the ‘waiting year’ before the pressure of board exams in Class 10, and make it a meaningful transition period to build up the basics early.
Maths and Science are getting a flexible makeover.
Parents are particularly interested in the restructuring of Mathematics and Science. Basic and advanced levels in both subjects are being introduced by the CBSE that will give the students a choice of difficulty level according to their learning speed and career aspirations without any restriction. As part of this restructuring, Maths Basic is being phased out in the new curriculum for Class 9.
In addition to this, Mathematics is moving towards a spiral approach to teaching, where key concepts are covered in more depth in each grade, building on their previous understanding. This is expected to result in higher retention, less learning gaps and higher competitive exam preparation.
Three Languages, Better Communication!
There’s a serious re-thinking of language learning too. The new policy makes it compulsory to learn a third language starting from Class 6 and students have to learn two Indian languages and the third language of their choice. The ultimate aim is the creation of real multilingual competence: a crucial competence in higher education, the world of work and in everyday life.
AI and Computational Thinking, From an Early Age
A welcome area of the curriculum that is looking forward is the addition of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking (CT) as a compulsory component in Classes 3-8, across all subjects including the humanities. From 2027-28 onwards, there are plans to introduce structured AI modules for Classes 9th to 12th and eventually make AI a formal exam paper.
This early, integrated exposure is specifically created with the generation that has been raised with the tools of artificial intelligence, with the aim of fostering digital literacy and computational thinking in a natural way, just as reading and writing are developed.
Report Cards That Look at the Whole Child
Evaluation is a process of change. Instead of just marking a child down, the new system encourages schools to adopt more holistic progress reports, which will include non-academic aspects like personality, leadership, emotional intelligence and working cooperatively.
